Fineline Studios generates geometric patterns with mathematically correct symmetry and exports them as print-ready files. On the App Store (English), the app is listed as Fineline Studios. Below are the questions that come up most often.

Getting started

Studio is the editor: pick a shape from the left rail, a symmetry from the right rail, then adjust size, repeat and colour in the panel at the bottom. Shuffle generates complete patterns one tap at a time. Draw lets you draw by hand inside one cell and have the symmetry replicate it. Library holds what you save.

Why doesn't the aspect ratio slider do anything?

For square symmetries (p4, p4m, p4g) and hexagonal ones (p3, p3m1, p31m, p6, p6m) the cell's proportions are fixed by the symmetry itself — changing them would break the repeat. Fineline Studios therefore hides the control and says so. Choose a rectangular group (p1, p2, pm, pg, cm, pmm, pmg, pgg, cmm) and the aspect ratio becomes adjustable.

Will my pattern tile seamlessly?

Yes. Every pattern is generated as one repeat unit that tiles the plane without seams, and that unit is what gets exported. Turn on "Show repeat unit" under Repeat to see its boundary.

Exporting for print

Choose SVG or PDF for vector output that scales without loss, or PNG / JPEG for images. Sizes are specified in actual dimensions (cm) with a DPI, so 10 cm at 300 dpi produces the pixel count your printer expects. Confirm dimensions, colour and resolution with your printer before production.

Fineline Pro is a one-time purchase with no auto-renewal. Exports never carry a watermark, free or paid. See the licence terms for what commercial use covers.

I bought Pro but it isn't active

Open Settings inside the App and tap "Restore purchase". This re-reads your App Store receipt. If you are signed in with a different Apple ID than the one used for the purchase, sign in with the original one first.

Where are my saved patterns?

In the Library tab, on the device where you saved them. They are stored locally and are not synced between devices, so deleting the App deletes them. Export anything you want to keep permanently.

Renaming a saved pattern

Patterns are named by the date they were saved. Long-press one in the Library and choose "Rename".
