Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost?

You can try everything free for the first 30 days. After that, a single one-time purchase ($29.99) unlocks all features for good. It is not a subscription. Future updates are included at no extra cost. If you have purchased before, use "Restore Purchase" in Settings.

Why doesn't it just translate everything?

Wonderline is designed to build your ability to read English as English. Relying on full translation doesn't get you there. Instead, quickly look up only the words and phrases you don't know, grasp the meaning, and read the rest yourself. (A full-text translation view is available when you need it.)

Reading a printed book

On the Read tab, use "Camera" or "Choose from Photos" to bring in a page. The text is recognized, and you can tap any unfamiliar word to see its meaning.

Reading PDFs, web articles, and text

On the Read tab, use "PDF", "Link" (an article URL), or "Paste" (copied text). For web articles, enter the URL and the main text is extracted for reading.

Transcribing audio or video

On the Read tab, choose "Audio / Video" and pick a file. Transcription runs on your device, in the background, so you can keep using the app. When it finishes you get a notification or toast; tap it to open the text. Audio is never sent off your device.

Using "Voice memo" (listening mode)

While reading, when an unfamiliar word comes up, press and hold the screen while you say the word, then release to finish (one word at a time works best). Review your captured words from "Review" and add them to your Words list.

Switching between Japanese and English definitions

In Settings → "Definition language", choose whether a tapped word shows a Japanese translation or an English-to-English definition. English definitions help you grasp concepts directly and are great for business vocabulary.

Sending from Safari and other apps (Share)

In Safari, Share → "Send to Wonderline" to import a URL. Select text and share it to read that text. Share an audio/video file to send it to transcription.

What happens to the words I pick up?

Words captured by tapping or "Voice memo" collect in the app's Words list. If you use the review app Wordsline, you can optionally sync only the words you choose from the Words tab (nothing is sent automatically).

Where is my data stored?

Imported text, words, and settings are stored on your device. All recognition and translation run on your device and are not sent to the developer's servers.

What can Apple Watch do?

Record a word with "Voice memo" on Apple Watch, and your iPhone transcribes it into your Words list.
